Humans have been telling stories since time immemorial. Whether in words or pictures, the interesting question here is not only the content but also how the story is related. Albrecht Dürer, William Morris, and Félix Vallotton carved their “stories” in wood, each in his own way: Dürer emphasized sculptural form, Morris surface ornament, and Vallotton strove for formal reduction. The goal of this tour is to sensitize the viewer to such stylistic and other narrative devices, such as alienation effects, word-and-picture games, serial ideas, or image assemblages. (Barbara Junod)
