After studying architecture at the ETH Zürich, Stephan Hürlemann (b. 1972) took a post as managing director at Hannes Wettstein’s (1958–2008) design agency in 2002, and then became director after Wettstein’s death, changing the agency’s name to Hürlemann in 2016. Clean structures are at the core of his designs, whether for speakers, cable systems, bentwood chairs, or parquet flooring. In this sofa for De Sede, Hürlemann takes his formal cue from the early classics produced by the company, which was founded in 1965 out of a former saddlery. The metal frame of the DS-22 with its high feet surrounds and carries with apparent effortlessness the individual upholstery modules. With their rustic double lap seams, the cushions form a lush contrast with the minimalist rigor of the frame and can be rearranged in different ways, enabling a variety of constellations.
