Ever since Jean Paul Gaultier made a corset for Madonna that she openly wore as a costume, rather than just underwear, lingerie has become a contradictory signifier. The reinterpretation of classic cuts, new materials like rubber and latex, new closures, and unusual color contrasts expand the conventional forms. Socially, the design of lingerie, swimwear, and sleepwear invariably plays in the field of tension between the sexes, and between the public and the private.
