American Pop Art, which took its cue from the culture of everyday life as well as commercial graphics and comics, served in turn as inspiration for packaging design in the 1970s. Faces and flowers were popular motifs, depicted with contrasting areas of color, while the color photographs suggested immediacy. The type became softer, and some letters seemed to melt under the influence of drugs. New types of packaging such as spray cans and beverage cans expanded the opportunities for creative design.
