Until the early twentieth century, coffee, tea, and cocoa were imported from regions controlled by the Western colonial powers. The packaging of so-called colonial goods reveals the notions and desires associated with these distant lands. Dark-skinned servants or beautiful women present both the product and its exotic origins. Cigarette brands rely more on abstract logos, while chocolate is advertised by way of its local ingredients.
