Instant recognition was the most important criterion when designing the typeface for CDG Airport in Roissy in 1970. Adrian Frutiger therefore undertook in-depth studies on the optimal spacing and character width and thickness. Early on he had sketched such typefaces in multiple variations. The sign templates were produced using rub-off letters. In 1976, Roissy was released under the name Frutiger as a body text font, slightly less bold and broad, for phototypesetting.
