The fact that women were not granted the right to vote until 1971 is one of the sadder chapters in Swiss democracy. Between 1919 and 1959, twenty-five referenda were held on the issue, always with a negative outcome. It was not until the fifties that attitudes slowly started to change, not least due to the increasing presence of women in the workplace. The confident beauty with short hair and a forward-looking gaze stands for a new, modern image of women. In 1960, her photographic portrait was used once again to campaign for women’s suffrage.
